Opus's concept is undoubtedly compelling. An brilliant but skeptic writer named Ariel Ecton (played by Ayo Edebiri) is chosen to tour the remote mansion of pop culture icon Alfred Moretti (Malkovich), who vanished thirty years ago. His reappearance is shrouded in mystery, and his mansion is inhabited by ardent devotees, mysterious rites, and an unsettling degree of manipulation. The film makes references to the history of arts, the shaky line separating genius from madness, and artistic exploitation. But instead of methodically examining these ideas, Opus gets caught up in its own aesthetic excesses. Despite combining eerie imagery, unsettling acting, and a solemn atmosphere, it falls short in providing a clear and compelling plot. The overall feeling is that the movie puts more emphasis on mystery than on real interaction.
